Hmmm, 10 years ago the design education cohort was just about to enjoy the near nullifying of Alexander's books at institutions like the one he had graduated from.... Are we returning to him whenever there is an economic down turn too?
Maybe. At least the focus on spatial / material solutions and decisions in the here and now is presently more valued than before, when it is obvious that a) "the all-printer" that will realize digital whims and algorithms is not around the corner, or that b) the developer who previously would build anything and pay any price is going under.
The nullifying of Alexander is extreme - his stance is a form of "end of history" so its quite understandable for most of academia to want to just forget about him - but we should give him credit and a place at the table always, not just in a downturn when trad is rad again.
