NYTimes reports on the recent uptick in climate-change denialism. A good quote from a scientist: "The physics of the greenhouse effect is so basic that instead of asking whether it would happen, it makes more sense to ask what on earth could make it not happen." read

Its not "denialism", its critical thinking. You can throw up 2000 scientists that say the earth is warming because of man and I can throw up 2000 scientists that say it's not but what you cant do is stifle the debate and thats exactly what has happened here.
It is sickening to see the pseudo intellectuals and soft brained graduates working so desperately for their own imprisonment. I guess happiness truly is slavery.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower's famous 1960 farewell address contained more than an admonition about the danger of an expanding "military-industrial complex." That speech was also an early warning of the current unholy alliance between the government and a scientific community dependent on the government for its funding.
".. the technological revolution during recent decades...research has become central...complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government...the solitary inventor... has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields...
...the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity.
The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded....we must...be alert to the...danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite."
pavlov.
but i degress.
here's the problem with ike's admonition, as you translate it, without a direct government investment in technology, arts, education, etc...this country would be left to the whims of a tyranny of "free market" corporate disinterest. govt investment in nasa, for one, has been one reason science even moves in this country, i dare say that creationists would have a stranglehold if it were not for federal involvement.
ah, way to keep shifting the goalposts, jack. so you are saying exxon/heartland/big coal is engaged in a widely cast 'critical thinking' effort to defame and denigrate scienctists? hilarious.
I can throw up 2000 scientists that say it's not
yet another lie from the great jackass
but what you cant do is stifle the debate
there is no legitimate debate - it's science v. witch hunters (deniers)
pseudo intellectuals
be careful, jack - you're treading on very hypocritical ice.
I guess happiness truly is slavery.
the reference is 'happiness IN slavery', jack...
soft brained graduates
ugh. hypocrite. ike's farewell address is from '61.
btw, if you actually read the address (instead of quoting beck's misrepresentation), you'll notice he's not against government funding of science
It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system – ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society.
<i>".. the technological revolution during recent decades...research has become central...complex, and costly. he's being critical of unchecked scientific/military/industrial progress - and that it's usually not in government's interest to change the status quo. besides - Ike's being critical of the generation that brought us nuclear bombs - no one with any power asked whether or not this was a good idea when they were making them.
the whole point of environmentalism is questioning whether or not this constant march toward "progress" is actually good for us in the long term... human accelerated global warming is just one of many problems we've discovered. it took decades for anyone with any power to take notice.
you have to really wonder who is behind the orchestrated denial of an overwhelmingly agreed upon problem within the scientific community - military industrial complex? governments? corporate interests?
hmmm, jackie and zoolander seem to be conviently ignoring yet another attack on climate scientists, this time @ U of Victoria...
They mass media have attached degrading tags such as 'skeptics' and 'deniers' in an attempt to undermine anyone with an alternative view to the elites who control us.
I suppose throughout history only a few have really known truth, the masses have always towed the populist line and will always remain slaves as a result.
How anyone cannot see global warming as a con is beyond me. I mean have you no memories? Do you not remember global cooling in the 70's, cfc's? holes in the o zone, and so on.
You are all very adaptable, you will adapt all the way to your shallow grave.
You mean the CFC and ozone problems that were solved due to binding global treaties?
nam, those binding treaties resulted in millions of jobs lost to third world countries and loss of freedoms, didn't you know that?
gordon brown the other day:
deniers = flat earthers.
btw, zooflatearther - it's 'toe the line', not 'tow the line'
Look closely at the picture. See that sadness? Thats the look of disdain after realising she wont get MY FUCKING MONEY
wow, i see one person resting before a meeting, and you see sadness? disdain? someone trying to steal your money?
who cares about your pennies, jackie. no one.
hope everyone has seen this video

It's intended to be a big attack on Al Gore, but who ends up looking like the big screaming delusional ideologues? Hello, Eugenics? Global Conspiracy?
Ya - especially the part about Enron helping develop the cap and trade scheme Al Gore's Hedge fund owns. This man is a fraud and a bum. These kids are doing a great service to our country. Thanks for posting.
Jack, if you weren't so anti-intellectual, you would realize that one could be critical of Al Gore's capitalist scheming while at the same time seeing through the pedantic lies that these kids are screaming about. At least they're protesting something. Silly me. i thought you hated hippies!
