One of the well known and colorfully respected figures of Los Angeles architecture scene passed away on Thursday, June 4th. Bernard Zimmerman, FAIA served as the chair of Cal Poly, Pomona and has been many architects' close friend and go to guy over the years including Frank Gehry, Ray Kappe, Glen Small, Thom Mayne, Ahde Lahti, Michael Rotondi, Eric Moss and others. A great interview with Mr. Zimmerman was conducted few years ago by Mark Dillon @ volume5.
In it, the first hand stories on the birth of Sci Arc in Pomona, past, present and future of Los Angeles architecture, Gehry, Kappe, Cal Poly days and much more, like, his conversation with Richard Neutra himself, sitting down at the bottom of the hill and observing the master looking up to his masterpiece, the 'Lovell House' and feeling proud of what he did... All from the man who has been there all along. All said still relevant, intriguing and historical.
