To follow up with the ThyssenKrupp competition news posted earlier today, Bustler has published a number of the entries that went unrecognized by the jury. You be the judge
the projects posted thus far would seem to validate the winning scheme... I think what we *really* need is a set of jurors' comments, talking about why they ranked the projects as they did.
seems like a weekly developed competition proposal to me....more so than a problem of poor judging. having a properly developed competition proposal allows people to have a sense of what the basis for judgement will be and what the goals are. with as all-over-the-map as loose as most of the entries are, it seems like someone totally missed the boat in setting it up.
I guess the problem is in the winner seemingly having a connection with the jury. and part of the jury (the big name architects) quitting - this competition feels quite flawed in its process.
Never mind the outcome. It's Dubai, so everything goes. and nobody cares.
The first prize is so not special at all! I could do that in 2 minutes in photoshop!!! WOW!!! I usually do not like to be a complaining designer on here and crit someone's work over the internet because I generally find it very annoying but this entry winning first prize is about as annoying as it gets! It just goes to show how ridiculous this competition is!
As for the 1st prize winner it is simply scandalous decision because o 3 presented panel you may only see the very week quality visualizations of this frame without any plan section nor motivation for stability etc.
The 2nd prizes images are really a beauty...and with an attempt of motivation for the lift. Very shrouded one… But however I wonder about the feasibility: how this nice image would be realized corresponding to the earthquakes norms, structural requirements, and sustainability aims and some other "boring" competition program requirements.
It reminds me strangely the International competition for the emblematic high visual platform supposed to promote PARIS 2012 Olympics. It was a wonderful image right taken from Rosinski & Van Hamme’s Belgian cartoon serial “Thorgal” This Paris 2012 Olympics winning 1st prize project was already awarded 4 years before for the previous Olympic Games in Athens...You should see the realized monument! For the authors it would be better to suicide. But we can not condemn the young creative but inexperienced authors. The mistaken choice was done by the Mutilated Jury by absence of the main attraction: ZAHA HADID and 2 other important architects supposed to be jury members, Mr CHINO ZUCCHI and ALFONSO VEGARA. Why?!

Yowza.
some of the other proposals are nice nough, but all very heavy.
i like the winner well enough. whatever the controversy clearly the judges had a preference for something lite. why the problem?

The image you all put on the front page for this keeps reminding me of LOST.
