VAUBAN, Germany - Residents of this upscale community are suburban pioneers, going where few soccer moms or commuting executives have ever gone before: they have given up their cars. Read entire article here.
i had the good fortune of visiting vauban a year ago and can say that the photos do not really do the project justice. there is an incredible diversity in the architecture of the homes and public buildings, and a wonderful sense of scale and... mystery (there is a nice stream and wooded area on one edge of the development). i couldn't help think while i was there that many suburbanites in the states would prefer this type of living. only if more people knew!

from my cold dead hands. oh wait that's my rifle. is there a motto for not giving up your car?
on a former military base no less--we should be more aware of how good military bases are for the progress of humanity.
nick,
in the e.u., old bases get turned into all kinds of interesting things - public airports for low-fare airliner, for instance.
in america, they tend to just close down and further increase the already blighted areas. awesome.
