Dear AAP Community,
I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Dagmar Richter as the next
chair of the Department of Architecture. Dagmar is an architect and teacher
of the highest distinction. She brings strong leadership, a cooperative
spirit, a great deal of energy, and a progressive vision to the department.
Dagmar will join us on July 1, 2009.
Dagmar has been a professor of architecture at U.C.L.A. since 1989. She was
educated at the University of Stuttgart, the Royal Art Academy in
Copenhagen, and the Städel School in Frankfurt. She has practiced, taught,
and lectured globally. Her work is widely published, including the two
monographs XYZ: The Architecture of Dagmar Richter (Princeton Architectural
Press) and Armed Surfaces: Architecture and Urbanisms 5 (Black Dog Press).
Dagmar comes at a time when the field of architecture is facing profound
changes. She possesses the perspective, experience, and temperament to
continue the department’s legacy of excellence.
I want to take this opportunity -- and reserve the right to take a few more
-- to thank Prof. Mark Cruvellier who has led the Department of Architecture
with remarkable dedication and energy for the past three years. Mark will
be teaching in Rome during the upcoming fall semester and will take a
much-deserved administrative leave in the spring, 2010.
