The old Art & Architecture building probably would have been demolished long ago if razing it were not cost-prohibitive. But that prospect was unthinkable on Saturday to the 600 people who gathered for the building’s official rechristening. Yale Daily
brutalism is fine but this brutal building should have been destroyed. standing so close to the kahn masterworks shows how bad it really is, not only in terms of functionality. it's not worth the effort to save everything, this being a case in point.
actually, in terms of function - rudolph hall (previously the a & a) works extremely well - the pits where reviews take place next to studio space with cat walks and special crevices to hide in or discover are perfect for an architecture school. it engenders discussion and inclusion. the building is all that much better now that the windows are tinted, there is central air - and no pigeons. as i look out the window right now at the kahn art gallery i am so curious how the previous post opinion was formulated because there is a calmness between the two buildings and if their relationship is anything - it is one that sets the other off
i think we must look beyond simple functionality when appraising the rudolph building. having essentially lived in it for 3 years i have to say it's a whole lot more fun, interesting, and resilient than almost any building i've been in. it's likely *better* functioning for being less easily understood. and the kahn buildings across the street are overrated.

Like superinteresting!, I too lived there for 3 years -- PRE-renovation -- and I couldn't agree more.
