Istanbul would be a more meaningful choice given the need to bridge the intercultural problems we have in the world. But as an architect and an urbanist I have to take a deep breath and be thankful that Istanbul was saved from many ill proposed projects I have been seeing in the press under the disguise of the olympic preparations.
It is Tokyo's problem now and I am sure they will design spectacular luxury show and showcase their technological edge. It is a safe and typical choice for a global fireworks.
noooooooo! we have to deal with Zaha's ugly stadium now, which looks like her futuristic poonani to be honest
I don't get the hate for the stadium. It's 2 blocks from my office and I'm totally happy to see it go up. There were more interesting proposals sure, but seriously did you see the proposals for Madrid and Istanbul ? Those were much lower on the quality of design scale.
I'm hoping the win will be just enough to get our slowly bubbling economy back to something more resembling health. Politically not as powerful message as Istanbul but I am guessing it will be cool event if a little bit boring.
I am glad Tokyo was chosen, exactly because there would not be a thousand meaningless interventions to the urban and infrastructural fabric - Tokyo already has a lot of those issues worked. out. I am also sure that the whole "uprising" in Istanbul a few months back contributed to their not being selected. And that is a good thing, seeing that the people were clearly opposed to meaningless interventions.
accesskb, is that your level of critique? Great!
