As more and more people move from rural to urban aggregations, an increasing percentage of urban water is being used by the informal agricultural sector. A recent IWMI study tried to identify how much of the water being used is either treated or untreated wastewater. BBC News
The report found that there are a number of possible benefits to the usage of urban waste-water for agriculture, with urban farms having the potential to function like natural wetlands serving as waste water treatment infrastructure. Additionally, it allows food production in places where there is a lack of water, or where no alternative clean water sources are available. It also recycles nutrients, meaning that farmers do not have to buy expensive fertilisers. However there are potential public health concerns if not done safely
