The transformation goes beyond the architecture, which helped inflate the Games' price tag to a record-smashing $43 billion. The government is also trying to create a new, improved population.LA Times
after the olympics, it might be a quite a let down for chinese, who are hungry for showing off their recent wealth in a typical nuevo rich fashion.
what happens after the olympics to any country is the process of deflation and saturated interest drop out.
proven pattern is;
win the olympics venue,
build for it,
everybody is talking about the country,
opening ceremonies,
athletes take over,
medals are distributed,
marathon,
closing ceremonies,
people had enough of the olympics.
life goes on...
olympics are too temporary to change billion and a half of people's lives. maybe glue them together for a month but even that is very questionable. so far chinese gov. demonstrated pretty good gripping action to keep olympic photo ops to limited venues and polish the vicinity sidewalks by hand.
basically, it is a $43 billion china ad campaign they bought into.
it is not good or bad, just the way it is.
now that they have adopted capitalist economic engine, they will have to keep up with the ad campaigns.
time to abandon everything else and open an ad agency office in china. there still might be a room...
try to come up with a slogan;
"china, so clean"
This week, Beijing police officers have begun patrolling certain neighborhoods, instructing businesses to not serve "blacks and mongolians" when the Olympics come to town. Additionally, they have closed down clubs that promote homosexuality and other "morally inconstitute" practices.
I doubt the facilities will be abandoned after the Olympics, thus the money will still be well spent for the public. It's not like Athens or Barcelona that do not have enough people in the city to fill up the stadiums!
A.R.Ch, the story you posted has proved to be unfounded. check the following link from the same resourse. It's the update of your post. And the update was posted yesterday.
Pak-Kei,
the Barcelona stadium was built in the 1920s... what they did in 1992 was just to adapt it for the Olympics.. and it has been used regularly since then -not filled up every week, but very useful for some sports events, concerts, etc-
