The redesigned extension to the Tate Modern contemporary art museum in London, launched today, shows Jacques Herzog moving from what would effectively have been a built diagram of stacked boxes - his first attempt of two years ago - into something considerably more smoothly sculpted. It's turning into architecture.

that's much better, I was worried there for a while with the shit they rendered before. Yes it is looking like architecture now.
i kinda liked it better the first way. it was more aggressive
yeah, the previous assemblage was much more interesting. this actually looks rather banal.
why do you say it was a diagram before and now it is architecture? i don't understand the argument.
to me it looks like it's suffering from a little VE slice and dice--you can make out this faceted form behind the boxes in the previous scheme. this one reduces the floor area and facade area.
and i agree-- i like the agression of the previous scheme more, this is kind of like a twisted tower turned into triangular surfaces. plus, i was wondering what the hell the last one looked like after it got turned into "architecture"
o d b,
the diagram-turning-into-architecture is the title of the original article... you should ask that to mr. Hugh Pearman
The intial rendering is a diagram in the sense of stacked program boxes and draping a skin over it - similar to the seattle public library.
The new scheme resolves this 'diagram' as a form or gesture; i.e architecture which, I find to be much more powerful as a relation and a juxtaposition to the Tate.
Some use the term 'aggression' for the initial scheme whereas I would say immature or clumsy.
hmmm...maybe I will..."Huuuugggghhhhh.."
i would call HdeM's original proposal more sculptural than diagrammatic. at least, i never saw any diagrams from the original to describe or explain how the form came to be, as you do in SPL. HdeM's original just looked like a pile of boxes, like Rachel Whiteread's sculptures.
there is something about the "turning into architecture" statement that still irks me for some reason....gggrrrrrlll...not sure why though.
Are they pullling a Gehry? Rehashing de Young with infinitely small variations...
architecture? what about cliche starchitecture of the worst kind! just another icon based on formal spectacle. BORING
first idea, let it be a diagram, was much more interesting.
