Instant Houses, Then and Now
Nicolai Ouroussoff reviews the new housing exhibit at MoMA. The idea of a well-oiled assembly line churning out gleaming and affordable new houses, flooded with light and as compact as a ship’s cabin, is a well-worn Modernist fable. NYT

Does it have to be though is the real question??
Well, I think the houses in the exhibit seem to try to answer this question.
I am particularly enamored with Kieren Timberlake's cellophane house with its off-the shelf components. Rather than inventing and producing a tectonic system like others (Burst, New Orleans) it uses and established one a new way. Its like of like NASA's "Faster, Cheaper, Better" initiative to build space probes from off-the shelf components.
Liebchen,
That is i think the most revolutionary step out of all. The decision to stop trying to develop a whole new product line for pre-fab housing and instead use off-the self components.
I think it holds the most promise, of actually getting off the ground..
