A headscarf blown in by the wind: A musuem for Islamic Art..
The Louvre's bold new Islamic art wing had its first stone laid by Sarkozy yesterday. The world's most visited museum will have Europe's biggest purpose-built exhibition space for an Islamic art collection. Guardian

retarded, so is sarkozy.
care to expound on such a thoughtful critique?
i've only been able to find one other image of the project. i don't really know what to make of it yet, but i do like the (perceived) quality of the interior gallery space.
i like zaha's proposal better, though.
a torqued reference to mecca?
Dread,
While i do like the reference to the Kabbaa in Hadid's proposal the thing i like about the winning proposal is that it is mostly/entirely underground. Thus, not contrasting to much with the historical fabric of the Louvre, but more importantly it is (to me) more understated.Less flashy
yes nam, i appreciate the more subtle quality of the winning proposal as well. i would just like to see a bit more.
The translation of my very profound comment: it's so easy to throw in a politically- and religiously loaded allegory like the veil to justify a design that is only a mundane example of zeitgeist: because the only resonance of islamic art has in French society- and European at large- (and shockingly the so called intellectuals that run the Louvre)- are the cliche icons, like the veil, and the very accessible and limited symbols of of the new cultures that they are so fearful of.
It seems appropriate for Sarkozy's France- it's a very American thing to do: It's like the hummer that knocks down the Eiffel Tower in Team America, a disneyfication of fear, arrogance and ignorance. And if you think I'm over-reading into this waay too much, bring it on!
