Today Gehry was at the London Serpentine Gallery unveiling the pavilion to the press (the building opens in 10 days) Here is a bunch of links to the British Media sites: The Times The Guardian The Independent Channel 4
i saw him on channel 4 news in the uk looking a bit "i don't give a toss".
when asked what inspired it, his answer was half-arsed:
Gehry: "the gardens [looking around]... garden structures, you think of wood... i do. the glass with the strips like the old stripped garden pavilions - i think.... leonardo catapult something.... it just came along..."
later on the reporter sneaks in a clip which should was meant to be off-camera.
Reporter: "so, you're coming up to 80..."
Gehry: "are you here to remind me of that... do i look like im 80? so, forget it"
touchy, touchy, franky.
To be honest, I hate the fact that the Serpentine has become old foggies, albeit starchitects.... the potential is great, but the pavillions generally are a disappointment. this is possibly the worst.
...wouldn't it be awesome if it was the London equivalent of the NY PS1? i can only wish.
it is a beautiful structure. gehry has gone back to his core on this one, i think...
i was predicting some of this.
continuous jabs at him made his personality very hardened toward public. he now talks like an angry person with wry smiles, whereas he used to be very down to earth and less pumped up.
good luck to his son. what a veneered (np) situation. fog looks pretty good, he must have a stylist now...
i agree with the poster above on serpentine, which is like a jet set event that seems to exist only to solidify starchitect system, reminding the earthlings once a year, whose in charge of this particularly haute bourgeoisie world of architecture.
i think its beautiful.
The problem, imho in being someone like frank gehry is, if he does a curvy, titanium thing like Bilbao, he is said to be copying himself. If he does something like this, its supposed to be 'nonsenses'.
What do you expect him to do? Start doing stucco home remodels?
lazy...and if this wouldn't have been done by gehry, i'd still say it's lazy (or worse)
the design is as lazy as his "inspiration"...
