Modern-day wealthy Manhattan "tycoon" looks to follow in Andrew Carnegie's footsteps by creating a mansion out of 3 brownstones in Carnegie Hill.
Neighbors in an uproar over suburbanization of urban neighborhood.
What I really want to know is who is the man's architect?

If you click on the Times site plan, you can also see floor plans of what I *think* is the proposed renovation.
yup, the heavy black line designates the existing wall which is already a 10' expansion off the original building. from what i understand, they want to add another 5'. 15' is like yet another brownstone!
the combination of 2 or more brownstones into a single family home is not nearly as uncommon as this article suggests.
that said, it is a bit aggressive to suggest significant exterior additions to a set of historic brownstones in a landmarked neighborhood. the doc will get his triple-wide townhouse, but probably not with the backyard addition. as for the bulkhead, it will likely pass the LPC if it falls below the bldg's sidewalk sightline.
Great use of red herrings...
