NEW MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE II PROGRAM AT THE
IRWIN S. CHANIN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AT THE COOPER UNION
ACCEPTING FIRST ROUND OF APPLICATIONS
NEW YORK—April 21, 2008— Anthony Vidler, dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, today announced that the School of Architecture is accepting for the first time applications for its post-professional degree, the Master of Architecture II program. The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.II) is a full scholarship design research, post-professional degree open to applicants with a first professional degree in Architecture or an equivalent accrediting agency in another country.
“The Cooper Union is delighted to offer practicing architects a new opportunity to extend their education by applying to our Master of Architecture II program,” said Dr. George Campbell Jr., President of The Cooper Union. “This new post-professional degree program will extend the vision and intellectual rigor of the undergraduate program and allow a further development of the school’s preeminent position in the education of architects.”
According to Dean Vidler, the three-semester program (two full-time consecutive semesters with a final thesis semester during the summer session) seeks to address modern and contemporary issues in the practice and theory of architecture and urbanism. Enrollment for the 2008-2009 academic year will be limited to eight students. The innovative curriculum will incorporate considerations from the present condition of globalization and urban design strategies to the continual emergence of new scientific developments and technologies.
The post-professional degree program will offer concentrations in one, or a combination, of three areas: Theory, History and Criticism of Architecture; Urban Studies; and Technologies. It will also prepare individuals who are developing parallel careers in teaching and/or wish to continue to engage in research toward an appropriate Ph.D. degree at another institution. Applicants are required to complete a minimum of two years of work experience after obtaining their first professional degree before applying to the program.
The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is one of the nation’s top ranked private colleges, offering degree programs in art, architecture, and engineering. Founded by industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper, the College has provided a full tuition scholarship, now valued at $31, 500 per year, to every accepted student since 1859.
