Holz,
Wasn't that how the first burbs in the USA were created as green, garden towns outside of city limits, which were based around the idea of riding the rails into the city for work..
who would believe that? outside of the downtown core, there aren't any residential towers in la. it's single family hos and 203 story apartments as far as the eye can see.
yeh, i know the issues. statistics are very open to manipulation, just as the article shows. of course it is an average, and manhattan skews things hugely, but still, LA suburbs are plain denser than many think. and there is more to the story than that author is telling.
regardless, the point is that suburbs are not all the same, and if planned well can have all kinds of benefits compared to trad urban forms. lets face it, density is not good for health. look at cairo in news recently with its high-decibel craziness going on. and i know i can feel the diference when i ride downtown in tokyo than when i ride in countryside. sure those are auto-emission issues, but concentration of humanity in general is not really a good thing without care. same for de-concentration. so why not study suburbia? there are lessons to be learned, both for good and for bad.

they might find it creates more problems...
maybe they'll build rail lines before the 'burbs... wouldn't that be an interesting experiment

Atlanta bad, NYC good!
NYC has lower density than LA...
nothing wrong with burbs if they plan them well. density is not nice either if its extreme.
yeah, holz was being facetious
jump - have a look at this article "discussing the myth that LA is denser than New York..."

btw, it is not a myth. it is factually correct.
what is off kilter is the interpretation.
