I love seeing cities develop strategies to improve the safety and desirability of cycling as an alternative form of transportation. A couple recent noteworthy examples: Tempe, AZ is adopting a common European practice of completely covering the bike lanes with red paint, as reported by C.I.C.L.E.; while Portland, OR has taken the painted lane concept further with green lanes and green "bike boxes", legal places to idle at intersections, in front of idling cars. View the bike boxes on Flickr. Hopefully LA will take note.

very nice.
Portland is the only US city I know that takes alternate transportation seriously.
Bravo, PDX, I love ya.
Weee...
awesome. seattle should take notice as well, but they won't. in the 2 years i've lived here, i've seen 8 accidents where cars have bumped bikes stopped at intersections. 3 were serious enough to warrant a meatwagon. i'm pretty sure one was fatal. and every time, it makes me want to:
a. vomit
b. toss a d-cell at the driver's temple
i believe portland also requires all bikes to have brakes, which is rough for track cyclists that do not want to drill their front fork. still, it's great to see a city that takes alternative forms of transportation seriously!
"Track cyclists" should either have a front break or they should be on a track. When is this trend going to end???
I love my fixed gear. Please don't get me wrong.
brake
We have had this kind of stuff in London for a while now, but central london is quite small so its got people out of their cars and onto bikes.
Lots of accidents as bike users tend to run red lights, and use pavements/sidewalks as their personal bike track
can't control your bike? no problem, just ride slower! behold, the walking bike, the perfect new "trend" for fashion-conscious cyclists.
