New Nissan HQ goes green
Nissan's new US$100 million HQ in Franklin, Tenn. is supposedly a green project. Nissan, however, will not be submitting for USGBC seal of approval, preferring to restore the wetland "rather than have a plaque on the wall"...
USGBC, undoubtedly perturbed at having a large muli-national corp thumb their nose at their weak system, was disappointed.
The project includes:
- restored native wetland
- "light harvesting system" (automatically dimmed lights & shades)
- sun shades
- parking in the building, preserving add'l greenspace
- contractor (Skanska) recycled almost 350 tons of construction waste

architect:

- who, surprisingly enough, advocate doing green buildings w/ out going through LEED process

It seems as if more than a few architects are beginning to advocate this path....
If they still design to these specs, than i guess it doesn't matter.
Result(s) do.
I've always thought the LEED system should be viewed as a catalyst for sustainable architecture, and not as an end itself - or worse, a marketing tool;
i would like to think that the USGBC would nonetheless applaud such development, despite it not going after their certification process
simples, i felt that way also.
it's like when Holl et al revealed the swiss embassy would be meeting Minergie standards, and LEED went "what the hell is that?" only to find out it was like LEED titanium^12th degree, cos LEED sucks so much.
amen brother holz & nam. you too simples.
points are not the point - but sometimes not certifying a building is just a value engineering move to save the $$$$ or to avoid expensive commissioning, or other good prerequisite...
Amen, Tree?
hahah..
