The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is planting test beds of oysters in Jamaica Bay. The plan is to use them to help increase water quality.
Explains Mr. McLaughlin, an ecologist in charge of the city’s effort.
“You can only improve water quality so much with hard engineering,” He added that “using soft engineering approaches” can produce both benefits to water quality as well as benefits to the overall wildlife habitat in the bay.
