Architect Jean Nouvel has designed an implausibly thin obelisk that would rise in crooked facets almost as high as the Empire State Building, casting some of Midtown's most prized and densely built blocks into darkness. Bloomberg | previously 1 | 2
really sick of moronic comments pretending to be critical and informed opinions.
"..the thick, looming lower floors"...completely stupid comment, makes no sense. look at rendering, compare to neighboring setbacks, know what you are looking at, then shut up.
"would cast MoMA's sculpture garden into almost perpetual shadow"...no, it wont. its about two buildings away from the garden. and the building tapers to a point minimizing the shadow on spaces farther away. a short shadow study suggests it will be just as kind-of-sunny as it is now.
"implausibly thin obelisk"...so now hes an engineer! braaaavo!
"cast some of Midtown's most prized and densely built blocks into darkness"...the prize winning corporate slab towers of midtown near 6th ave. hurray!
"It's not even leavened by the wind-scoured plazas that gather a few puddles of welcome sun along Sixth Avenue"...see, isnt the corporate playland on 6th ave. just marvy! wow, good thing he knows architecture as well as he does...
rant over.

the concept of "transferring development rights" seems very strange to me...but then again, it's NY.
as far as the article goes, the building meets code; can't blame mr. nouvel here for utilizing all the square footage available...again, it's NY!
i still dig it.
