Yeah - it almost looks like there is more steel than usable space. Kudos to Arup. I wouldn't want to be responsible for figuring out how to construct a building like this in an earthquake prone region.
The truly amazing thing is the engineering involved in process of construction. Designing a building that will stand when finished is one thing, but what about the infinate intermediate steps? That's an art all unto itself.
is it just me or did the rendering seam MUCH better than reality?
the glass looks like plexiglass and it appears that the structural gymnastics have required so much steel that one might have to dodge a beam or column every 8-0" to 10'-0" on center...
is this what OMA has to offer? what a waste of money and building materials!

super.
That's amazing...now I can go back to working on a jamb detail.
yes. WOW. it looks almost like a solid tube of steel. wonder if they have anything quite as pedestrian as transfer beams in there...

how poetic....
"..Well, we all need some[tower] we can lean on / And if you want it, you can lean on me"
"caulk as required"
will it be done in time for the olympics - looks impossible that it would be functioning
the building won't be finished until 2009. For more on the connection, and a video, check out the Beijinger:
