I recently completed a series of guest columns for MetroMode, a Detroit region online magazine. Topics range from recontextualizing abandoned structures to a proposed borough system for Metropolitan Detroit. Read all five entries here.
I enjoyed revisiting Detroit via those posts, Michael, thanks for posting it.
The often-heard comment that Detroit is "a city about making" is definitely true. I've never been in an environment where making seemed so unquestionably possible, no matter what scale, material, functionality. Everyone seems to share this matter-of fact understanding that manufacturing of any type - from cars to hand embroidery - is how we inhabit in the world.
I own a beautifully packaged ceramic wall hook we bought on one of our visits back to Cranbrook - was that Bethany's? Her name sounds so familiar...
Afraid not - Bethany's current focus is neckware. She was webmaster at Cranbrook for many, many years though. She also designed Skinny Puppy's costumes for the '04 tour...

i recently saw some of those ties for sale (only 2 left) at a small shop in ferndale...i am always looking for interestingly designed ties (so hard to find), and i will definitely order a couple of them...once again, archinect delivers!

i've heard detroit often being described as "the only 3rd world city in the US"...then i realized that's precisely why i like detroit so much, and now take that description as a compliment to the city...it has the realism that is absent in other american metropolitan centers...i doubt i would live anywhere else in the US...

Maybe that's how I know the name.
The ties are gorgeous, BTW. Every architect should wear them. And Christmas is coming, hmmmmm......
