A long article on the final Revision of Blade Runner from Wired.
In are quotes from a variety of futurists, directors, scientists and an architect......
Thom Mayne
Architect
Blade Runner anticipated the conception of the metropolis that we have now, as a global phenomenon. It's so thorough in this depiction that it's incredibly useful to anyone making environments. It reminded architects to think about the physical environment in cultural terms, as something ephemeral and chaotic. Twenty-five years later, it's still contemporary.

This was a fun read. And now I have to drag out my husband's old copy of it to see if I can spot that dang thumb in the phonebooth!
re: actual imagery rather than digital: I think when you can see the physical evidence (i.e. the thumb, the cables supporting the spinner) it makes the whole thing seem more real. Twenty years ago I would have said that seeing the cables destroys my ability to believe in the fantasy and thus be empathetic with the characters. Now that CG has taken over movie making, I find that evidence of physical objects (or people) being used - even if it destroys the illusion - makes me feel more empathy with the characters.
Also, I wonder how many architects saw Blade Runner and started designing to mimic that vision - chicken, egg, anyone?
the first DVD i purchased was Blade Runner...
LB, if you have blade runner only on VHS, i'd highly recommend you rent (or buy) the DVD version...very crisp...
i'd also recommend the newer director's cut DVD for the lesser known "THX1138"...fantastic!!!!
