In the two years since Hurricane Katrina, what has the rebuilding effort produced? No grand designs. No inspired vision for the future of New Orleans. There have been only a handful of earnest, grass-roots proposals to preserve what’s left of the historic fabric. Amid this atmosphere of malaise, two recently announced projects for downtown New Orleans stand out as the first truly creative attempts to foster the city’s resurrection. NYT | Images

these are certainly some of the sexiest projects going on, but it's a shame that N.O. has to position them counter to all of the less formally exciting work going on - work that is (arguably, yes) more impt.
new orleans will need a combination of these blockbusters and the smaller, quieter rebuilding projects. the ones that will mean the repair of the urban fabric, the maintenance of the scale and layers of history, and the expression of the city itself are no less interesting.
it's the things that rise out of the city rather than those things that land there that will be good indicators of the city's spirit remaining vital.
