In Los Angeles alone, billions of public and private dollars have been lavished on transit-oriented projects such as Hollywood & Vine, with more than 20,000 residential units approved within a quarter mile of transit stations between 2001 and 2005. New research shows people prefer cars regardless.

In yesterday's LAtimes, a related story about congestion tolls and pay express lanes on the freeway had a poll asking if money should be spent on the freeways or transit.
Should L.A. officials bring toll roads and other forms of congestion pricing to the city.
so far the response has been:
28.6% Yes. I'll pay for a quicker commute.
24.0% No. Roads should remain free.
47.5% Enough about more roads. Rail is the answer.

I voted for rail. LA has enough freeway miles!
in my research in small city (1 million) in japan all the residents drive, even to places they could easily walk to. only students ride the train to school (legal driving age is 18)...everyone else drives. average trip time 5 to 15 minutes.
people just like cars and until they are too expensive they will continue to use them. rationality has nothing to do with it.
