As for Mies' continuing relevance, the main lesson he draws is: “We should not copy. We should try to understand the time we're living in and how we can make use of the latest technological possibilities so that architecture continues to move forward. We should build for generations to come. Architecture is not something fashionable. It has duration.”
What this means in terms of the school's future direction is a question still to be answered.

A very important moment for Chicago architecture. I only hope that he does, or can, bring real change to IIT. He seems to have a laissez-faire approach, saying, in a recent lecture at IIT, the change most come from the students and faculty. That sounds like no change to me. I have a distinct felling that the trove of antiquities that is much of IIT's faculty is not interested in what Arets might have in mind. Hopefully, with the help of people like Ronan, he will have success in bring IIT into the 21st century.
