For his latest project, he enclosed Gaetano Russo’s 1892 statue of Christopher Columbus at Columbus Circle within a living room on a scaffold more than 70 feet up. Visitors will be admitted into the 810-square-foot space for a carved-marble-eye view of Central Park. — nytimes.com

I love, love, love the premise of this guy's work! What a change in perspective and appreciation for things we live with but never see.
is his premise really about a change in perspective and appreciation for the things we live but never see? it seems to me that that might be the consquence and not the premise.
"And I noticed that Columbus is really in a high position. That’s what attracted me. By raising up people’s eyes, you can see things with a different perspective. That’s the important point of it." - the author, as quoted in the article.
i still think thats not his premise; he talks like we architects talk sometimes. he de- then re-contextualizes as a matter of nature and principle, right? thats how he describes himself. i think its the playfulness of his mind, his quirky sense of humour irrespective of lessons learn. there is no new light shed nor does it garner a novel perspective on the statue per se - it becomes something else altogether. funny, sureral, kitsch...like a planned drag show does not shed light on the persona of the people in drag. its carnivalesque - why must we be pedantic about it? i like it.
which is to say, i think there is no premise -thankfully- to such work. its like a sense of british good camp.
Fucking retarded. What a waste, yo!
It seems to be about ownership imo. It is kind of cool, but some projects are better left on paper. When you actually build these cynical projects it kills the point. People look at a paper concept and say "that would be terrible" The horrors are left to the imagination of the viewer. People visit something like this and they never get the big picture. It's like reading Brave New World vs. living in brave new world. You can't see the forest from the trees.
Also, reminds me of this proposal I saw somewhere out there on the internets...It was for a competition. The person designed a building around the statue of liberty. Anyone remember seeing this?
This is so cool. I would never have imagined what Central Park looks like 8 stories up. The irony of Columbus in your living room, who would have thunk!
This is some totally wholesome artwork!
