The James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony was held last night at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, NYC. Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis (LTL Architects) won the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design, for Xing Restaurant in NYC. Bustler

LTL is cool but I can't see how they beat out Nobu or Morimoto with Xing. The red velvet seating and illuminated Chinese characters have overtones of seedy 80s Ginza.
when in nyc my friends and i ran into dash dogs for a bite. after talking with the owner (who also owns tides, another LTL project) and hearing about how LTL used unpaid interns to construct their projects as well as clever details such as sealing an air conditioning unit in a steel box or using flimsy brackets that let cieling tiles with hundreds of wooden skewers fall and embed themselves into customers heads, i've had a change of heart regarding these guys.
Arjun, that's disheartening, for sure.
On a side note, Lewis has better frames than Lewis.
nice medals, looks like the olympics
Arjun,
I know archinect is the perfect forum for the spreading of unfounded rumors but I really need to step in here. I worked for LTL on Dash Dogs and a couple of other projects (though I’m no longer there) and I’ve got to say you cannot trust anything Stephen Yee the owner of Dash Dogs and Tides has to say. To put it bluntly, he is a manipulative and possibly pathological liar and has been basically slandering LTL for the past year because he owes them a lot of money. To put things in context, this guy worked for FEMA after 9/11 and has recently been convicted of submitting fraudulent claims and sentenced to 40 months in prison. I know pointing this out may seem petty but it’s unbelievable to me how this guy can trash LTL’s reputation with zero consequences. LTL designed and built both places for next to nothing. Throughout Stephen was insatiable in his demands and when LTL said they can’t do anymore work for him without being paid for their expenses he started slandering them to anyone who walked by. I went by Dash Dogs a couple of months ago and Stephen launched into his stream of bullshit about everything that’s ‘wrong’ with both restaurants and honestly it’s all lies. Interns were paid. The ceiling at Dash Dogs did not fall down. It was ripped down by Stephen because of a dispute with his landlady that had nothing to do with the design. Stephen bought the AC unit without talking to LTL and then expected us to install it. I could go through and refute everything he says point by point but you get the gist --the guy is totally and completely full of shit. Yeah both places look bad right now but everything that’s ‘wrong’ with the restaurants is stuff that should have been taken care of through regular maintenance (i.e. mopping, fixing the walls when costumers put holes in them, et al.). I know this rant probably seems overly defensive but it kills me that LTL who do great work is having their name dragged through the mud by this asshole.
wow. i apologize in that case for not getting both sides of the story. I guess the fact that stephen took us for a tour of tides and was so vociferous about the whole thing that i took his word for it.
i actually liked dash dogs when i checked it out over spring break and thought xing was the shizzie. very well done restaurant (great food too!!!). i especially liked the bathrooms. good stuff.
