A fuel tanker explodes, heat melts the freeway, which collapses and governor plans to declare emergency in Bay Area. No one died. Worst traffic jams to come in San Francisco, Oakland and vicinity. AP/yahoo
This is remarkable. Go public transportation though. Good luck with this Bay Area people....I wonder if they will go after the trucker or company for any of the damages? They should....
Hmmm....in my screen view at the moment, I see a remarkable similarity between the image of the collapsed freeway and the image of Herzog and DeMeuron's stadium proposal!
This overpass was constructed from steel sections, due to higher seismic performance over concrete. The concrete in the photo is just the roadbed. A big variable affecting the down time of this freeway is the global steel shortage, no one in the highway department has any information yet.
Some Public transit agencies nearly doubled their capacity for Monday, but much of it wasn't needed, so go telecommuting I guess...
Thing is, major infrastructure outages happen from time to time in CA, from the earthquakes and all. You'd think Caltrans would pull their heads from their asses and keep a stash of steel around for things like this, guess they gave it all to Thom Mayne....

I am absolutely fascinated by this. First, I'm glad no one was killed or seriously injured.
there is something magical in the image of heavy, permanent things melting into nothing, like videos of skyscrapers being demolished.

I didn't know coventional fuel could get so intense as to melt reinforced concrete.

reminds me of a project I did in undergrad...
