PTW’s National Swimming Center for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing - aka the Bubble Building - exemplifies what all new construction should aim to be: beautiful, functional, forward-thinking, and most importantly, a good example for future development in a nation whose growth appears to know no bounds. Kidding, kidding....but only a little.
Honestly I think the bubble building is gorgeous. I love that the cladding is used to capture energy, and the whole interaction of it with the atmosphere is wonderful. And it's beautiful to look at, especially from inside.
Its surprising Inhabitat has such dated images of the project -- there are pics of it almost complete to be found all over the web (flickr in particular).
And Chris Bosse will be talking in SF soon as well I believe...
just so you all know, the chinese decided to go for a cheaper version of the building, so the facade doesn't actually work the way it is described in its initial concept stages. It is mostly for decoration now. this information came from an engineer working on the project.
