Lautner's Concannon Residence, from Dust to Dust
In 1960 John Lautner designed and built the Concannon Residence in Beverly Hills. The City of countless modernist architecture bones in its walk in closets and with its gleaming real estate teeth, penchant for greed and bad taste, Beverly Hills did nothing to save this gem of a house from the wrecking ball.
The house was sold to neighbor James Goldstein, who destroyed it in 2002.
Beverly Hills, a Los Angeles municipality, known for its fake grace and disdain for public opinion other than its own stakeholders, resisted any kind of preservation ordinance until last year when the city of the imitation grandeur adopted an ordinance at last to put some rules on demolishing significant architecture older than 45 years. We can only wish the residents of Beverly Hills become more aware of cultural values concerning the entire city of Los Angeles and stop slipping on the red carpet shamelessly.
From 1995 to 2002 my filmmaker friend Andrea Kreuzhage occupied the Concannon Residence. She redesigned and updated the bedroom and the kitchen layout the way Mr. Lautner himself would like and documented the experience during the construction and afterward.
Following are the links to this documentation with the footnotes of Andrea Kreuzhage.
