the single action that seems to have had the greatest impact is the decision to make the Strøget a pedestrian corridor (and the subsequent replacing of parking lots with public squares). Everything else followed thereafter?
archinect member rpsnino was recently doing a fullbright research project with Gehl and Helle Søholt (Helle was my studio professor for a summer term at DIS-Copenhagen in 2002). rpsnino used to have a site up that demonstrated some of his process and findings, but I can't find it at the moment. My recollection is fuzzy, but I think part of his research involved taking Danish patterns of growth (co-operative housing etc, vs. typical suburbs?) and figuring out how to implement similar strategies in the states.
does it matter if danish people think their way of life is better for everyone else? I think its better if others from the outside think its worth learning from and not one group telling others what is right. Does the danish environment in copenhagen have valuable qualities to it...yes. Is it the solution to everything...probably not.
