Culver City, CA – September 21, 2006 – Vitra Inc. is celebrating the opening of its fourth showroom in the United States, the others located in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco. The new Vitra Showroom is in the Helms Building located at 8753 Washington Boulevard, Culver City, CA. At 2,500 square feet, the new two-level space boasts huge windows permitting optimal natural lighting. As with all Vitra spaces, the interior of the showroom was designed in-house by Vitra.
As a showroom for Vitra’s Contract Office Systems, the main level includes the following:
Ad One (by Antonio Citterio with Toan Nguyen): A modular office furniture system which easily adapts to the changing requirements of an organization, and can be customized to create many workstations and large configurations.
Level 34 (by Werner Aisslinger): A bench-based modular and expandable furniture system that creates autonomous work areas and relaxation zones, individual spaces and storage facilities, and waiting and reception areas all with integrated wire management.
Chair Lab: A space to test, evaluate and customize a multitude of office chairs.
Point of Inspiration (POI) Wall: A concept related to the Home Collection, the wall serves as a place of reference for those who value design, and contains a range of small objects such as selections from the Miniatures Collection, books from the Vitra Design Museum and George Nelson clocks.
Additionally, the main level includes select items from the Home Collection that provide soft seating and illustrate the history and richness Vitra has in design. Key pieces currently seen from the Home Collection include Hella Jongerius’ Polder sofa and Bovist cushions, as well as Frank Gehry’s Cloud lamps.
The smaller second level includes the following:
Joyn (by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec): An open system that embraces the diversity of the workplace and encourages communication between people by breaking down the physical barriers between them; however, it can also provide areas for seclusion and specialized tasks.
Storage Wall (by Antonio Citterio with Glen Oliver Low): Offers not only storage, but also serves as an architectural element that organizes space.
Innovative in design, it’s no coincidence that Vitra’s Los Angeles showroom is located in the up-and-coming Culver City. Just as it was one of the first companies to enter New York City’s Meatpacking district, Vitra is now one of the first to take on an area of LA that is most known for the Helms Bakeries, which furnished the first bread on the Moon with Apollo 11. Now touted as “The Helms Furniture District,†Culver City is flourishing with designers, architects and artists, and it is evident that Vitra remains committed to the development of design.
