Euthanasia Coaster by Julijonas Urbonas
“Euthanasia Coaster” is a hypothetic euthanasia machine in the form of a roller coaster, engineered to humanely – with elegance and euphoria – take the life of a human being. Riding the coaster’s track, the rider is subjected to a series of intensive motion elements that induce various unique experiences: from euphoria to thrill, and from tunnel vision to loss of consciousness, and, eventually, death.

this dude scares me
I haven't watched the video, but I love this idea. It's funnily macabre.
The idea of euthanasia is abhorrent by itself--but the added layer of an architect or artist designing a machine/structure that kills, with some aesthetic veneer , is just gross. How is this any different than a design project on contemporary guillotines, or electric chairs? Even though this was conceived in a hypothetical 'studio' context, I'm disgusted that its designer apparently tolerates euthanasia enough to indulge in the drawing of an 'elegant' killing device. Why is Archinect giving this crap more exposure than it deserves?
when i was a kid i had a recurring nightmare that i was trapped in an amusement park of deathly thrill rides. looking back, it probably had something to do with my addiction to roller coaster tycoon at the time.
anyway, i am totally against the death penalty in any form, but think this project is interesting because, at the very least, it's one of those ideas that splits one in half.
Guy in the video sure looks like he's having a blast. That's how I want to go, puking my guts out, organs crushed against my ribcage, brain deprived of oxygen. I want to ride it again! Wait..
A lot of people don't think euthanasia is abhorrent at all. Granted should I ever choose it for myself I don't think I would want it to be on a roller coaster…but I think the bigger idea of proposing something extreme as a way to generate discussion is a good one in this instance.
Okay, I'll bite, since some people look at this contraption as something more that a tasteless joke.
I am not against euthanasia, and I think the project is creative in a purely conceptual, tongue-in-cheek kind of way. If you watch the video, however, he seems quite serious about the viability of this death coaster and even advocates using it as a means of dealing with overpopulation in the future (that I found particularly unsettling).
This is the type of indulgent device that people who are not considering euthanasia fantasize about as a means to end it all. In reality, when you are in so much pain that you'd rather end your life, the options become trivial. You could experience the same euphoria getting pumped full of drugs or jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge anyway.
The guy obviously put some effort into it, but the "bigger idea" is completely flawed--as if people not having enough thrilling ways to euthanize themselves were really an issue. Furthermore, proposing this as some kind of humane way to murder people due to overpopulation is completely offensive.
There's already too many people on this planet. We need more projects (and more inspired thinking) like this.
Bravo, yo!
Good post, jason. I agree, and I still haven't watched the video so I'll take other's words for it that the designer is, perhaps, not altruistic. We don't want a carousel situation, after all.
