“It had such a low budget. I was criticized for putting the windows in too small, but it got more expensive the more glass I had. I wasn’t the one who put the workers near the windows, limiting the light let in. Most people don’t realize I didn’t design the interior.”
Despite proceeding to design award-winning buildings and products worldwide, Graves holds the Portland Building as one of his greatest achievements. He still enjoys talking about the sculpture that sits in front, Portlandia.

I still use this case in one of my classes.
citizen so do I! We just talked about it two weeks ago!
I love the Portland building and most important I love that this building happened. It's ungainly-looking, now, but when it came out it was groundbreaking and super risky. I like how it relates to the park and to the County building across the park from it (which came later - nice job, ZGF!). I also like how colorful it is, and it led directly to other Portland buildings becoming more colorful and interesting on the skyline. And I absolutely adore Portlandia as a public sculpture - you should too.
this thing is a POS
Word to mdler
I proudly wear my love for the Portland Building as a banner of how not-cool I am. Also old.
The circus came to Portland; common tho within budget proposals pushed aside in favor of the new retro, the fave ego, a "Portlandia" skit long before the show, best executed as a tin box, better seen as postcard art on an easel in a Portland park, hidden in the trees, Portlandia is chained to a 'cake', she should stab it with her trident and be set free, this building should be home to Saturday Market, it is poorly built, poorly engineered(seismic), inhabitants unhappy, "not enough $ for windows" -hunh? one of the many post award budget extras was for $300,000 facade ribbons "required to complete the design" - in many aspects not a successful first large public building for an Architect better suited and more successful at Disneyland .....Yes, Portland loves the quirky. many still chant "free Portlandia" and let the architecture crumble on its own.......where would we be without our notable civic clown (similar theme in the design competition charade for the OHSU tram)
