Despite strident appeals from some neighbors, it looks like Zaha Hadid is coming to San Diego.
The city’s planning commission on October 20 approved a request to have Hadid and San Diego firm Public demolish an existing house on 8490 Whale Watch Way in La Jolla and replace it with a 12,700 square foot residence with four bedrooms, six bathrooms, and an indoor pool.

Twelve thousand seven hundred square foot private house that looks like a whale's behind.
Note: this, not this, is jumping the shark.
BTW, if you like whales this book is not-to-be-missed:
There goes my former Neighborhood - first, Romney has filed an application with the city to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot, single-story home at 311 Dunemere Dr. and replace it with a two-story, 11,062-square-foot structure. No date has been set
Now Zaha? -
Wow and just the other day I was wondering who can still afford to live in La Jolla (my parents live there)... and now I know
I have been thinking about taking up residence on Black Beach as a Homeless Person....maybe Zaha...will toss some coins my way while she walks the beach...
san diego?
It is better than many of the Neo-Mediterranean Mc Mansion crap that grace (or destroy) SoCal beaches. I am glad the planning commission approved it, and had the vision to see something new go up for a change/
The whole premise of building a 12,000 sft house is ridiculous, but I am also sure that most of us criticizing this would gladly accept this commission.
sameold, it's definitely better than any McMansion, and I do applaud a planning commission for taking a risk on something not Neo-whatever. I'm not even saying it's not good. I do think it's difficult, once a whale's tail gets in one's head, to not see a whale's tail every time one looks at it. The interior spaces might be lovely, the view might be lovely, the craftsmanship amy be lovely, etc. Will be interesting to see how it evolves during and after construction.
Donna, that is true. I cannot help but think of the Urban Dictionary definition of whaletails:
whaletail
There is a (rather disgusting) website with whaletail pics as well, which I was tempted to post here, but will not!
Neo Rat Pack Swank
what do you have against whales donna? what did a whale ever do to you?
Great place for Architecture! Now Students from San Diego's New School of Architecture and Woodbury of SD can use this house as an Amazing Case Study!
“Actually, orcas aren't quite as complex as scientists imagine. Most killer whales are just four tons of doofus dressed up like a police car.”
