Times Culture Editor Jonathan Landman: In this case, Michael had some things to say about the approach he will take to this beat that I and my bosses thought were worth amplifying. The old-writer-new-mantle thing played a part, but there’s certainly no guarantee that a writer gets a Page 1 story when he or she switches beats. — New York Observer
In his first review, MIchael Kimmelman goes to the South Bronx of all places, sending a message that he may just be up to the task of replacing, even besting, Nicolai Ourossoff.

"The real test for Via Verde — watch this space — will be once its residents have settled in, to see how green and healthy and gracious they actually find it.
Meanwhile one thing’s already certain. With the economy struggling and poverty rising, the project points architecture, and the architectural conversation, in the right direction."
Great start by Kimmelman, the bolded passage above makes me wonder if his domain will include not just the pre-opening/just-opened press piece but also post-occupancy reviews. Looking at whether buildings are performing as intended/designed?
More generally i really like the way this local NYC piece of architecture was used as a launching point both for his approach/criticism regarding architecture at large.
It was so so. I do appreciate the emphasis on social awareness but I think he still needs to write about architecture. And since I don't dislike architects, I would like to read about how a particular building fits into the career of the architect or history of the firm who designed it. In this piece, the vile Sen. Ruben Diaz seems to get as much credit as Grimshaw. I hope the Times didn't simply trade a pro-Starchitect critic for an anti-Starchitect critic.
