Following our previous look at an opening for a Museum Technology Manager at the California Science Center, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Project Captain at Practice (formerly GGA+).
The role, based in Pasadena, calls for an individual who will engage with design, project execution, team leadership, quality control, marketing, and firm culture advocacy roles across the studio. Among the responsibilities for the role are coordinating project design and developing creative concepts, overseeing team adherence to project delivery standards, and developing and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external collaborators. A minimum of 5-7 years of postgraduate professional experience is required for the position.
At a time when Pasadena has endured some of the worst destruction and upheaval of the latest Los Angeles fires, the open role at Practice offers us the opportunity to highlight a firm whose work revolves around community engagement. Operating under the banner of “designing joyful places for social change,” Practice has built a portfolio over four decades spanning education, housing, and civic spaces.
“Architecture and design bring people together,” the studio says about its ethos. “Welcoming and accessible civic places encourage participation and foster a sense of belonging in every community member.” Meanwhile, the firm notes that “housing is a human right” and that “with experience across the full spectrum of housing typologies and a focus on affordable housing solutions, our architectural approach ensures that everyone, regardless of income, can enjoy high-quality living spaces that foster well-being and community.”
The firm’s housing projects have won particular acclaim in recent years. At the 2023 AIA|LA Design Awards, the studio’s California Endowment 'Hope Village' Restorative Health Campus was honored for its provision of 150 permanent supportive units for previously incarcerated individuals alongside a series of holistic community spaces. At the 2023 AIA|LA Residential Architecture Awards, meanwhile, the firm’s Summit View Permanent Supportive Veterans Housing was honored for providing 50 housing units for formerly unhoused veterans.
One year previous, at the 2022 AIA|LA Design Awards, the firm’s LAC + USC Restorative Care Village was honored for providing 300 permanent supportive housing units as part of a broader “socially woven” healthcare district. “Central to our proposal is the holistic integration of architecture and landscape,” the firm says about the scheme. “The project organizes itself as an “urban courtyard block”, maximizing the perimeter area of the site to house 300 residential units and supportive programming, while also maximizing contiguous landscape area in the form of a communal landscape.”
