Archinect has received images of a new private residential design in the coastal city of Guarujá, Brazil. Studio MK27’s Canopy House was completed in July of 2023 under the direction of architect Marcio Kogan and co-designers Regiane Leão and Marcio Tanaka.
A blend of references to forestry and Brazilian culture, the suspended white prism design is supported by a sequence of concrete stilts. Above the main volume, an elevated platform was constructed that blurs the line between interior and exterior spaces and establishes a living area that "fosters a sense of immersion in the vibrant canopy of the Atlantic Forest."
Inside, subtle transitions between the living and social spaces emphasize a "fluid interplay between architecture and nature." The architects say: "The strategy leaves no indoor alternative for the connection of spaces; it is a radical experience of the weather, the winds, the smells, and the light of the jungle."
A cobogó breeze block confers an added layer of texture to the "symphony" of materials used by Diana Radomysler's interior design scheme. Straw pendants by Israel Piaçava are joined by side tables and even a whole wall made using the materials. A diversity of fabrics is on display thanks to a variety of rugs, hammocks, and armchairs, including pieces by Sergio Rodrigues. Wood is used to make sliding mashrabiyas panels, and concrete walls form the 'allegro' finale to tie the composition together as one distinctive whole.
The six-bedroom design has eight full baths and was realized at 8,449 square feet. A spiral staircase is used to access the home, further connecting the terrace level with the bedrooms.
Earlier this year, we covered MK27’s win in the 2024 AR Future Projects Awards' 'Housing' category. Another tropical design inspired by a Brazilian regional aesthetic, the studio's exquisite Canal House in Miami, was featured here in 2020.
