Following last week’s look at an opening for a Physical Design + Fabrication Internship at VolvoxLabs, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Design Research and Teaching Fellowship at Northeastern University.
The fellowship, which has an application deadline of March 1st, offers an “opportunity to develop a body of design research based on a specific area of interest while contributing to the vibrant intellectual culture of the school.” Applicants for the role must hold a terminal degree (PhD, Master’s, or equivalent) in their proposed area of research by the appointment start date, with a preference for prior studio teaching experience.
Why the role interests us
The fellowship at Northeastern offers us the opportunity to explore the various research outputs involving faculty at the institution that have emerged in recent years, aligning with Northeastern’s own emphasis on “sustainable design, urban ecologies, collective housing, public health, and material experimentation.”
Last year, for example, Northeastern associate professor Ang Li served as a participating artist in the U.S. pavilion at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale which explored worldwide plastic dependency. Li’s installation explored the cultural legacy and material afterlives of petroleum-based materials in the built environments, anchored by a 33-foot wall filled with expanded polystyrene foam retried from U.S. recycling networks.
In 2022, meanwhile, a Northeastern University design research proposal was awarded the AIA’s $100,000 Latrobe Prize. Titled “CommonSENSES: Standards for ENacting Sensor Networks for an Equitable Society,” the proposal explored the potential of sensor networks in their application to environmental quality challenges faced in urban areas such as Chelsea, Massachusetts, the group’s beta subject.
The cross-disciplinary research team was composed of faculty members taken from Northeastern’s Environmental Sensors Lab, School of Architecture, College of Social Sciences & Humanities, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Engineering departments. The win marked the second time a group from NEU has taken the 11-year-old prize following a previous entry in 2017.
In 2021, a research team from Northeastern unveiled research into the creation of a sustainable material that could cool buildings without the need for conventional AC systems, instead relying on a “cooling paper” made from 100% recycled paper that could cover roofs. In the same year, a separate research project by Northeastern and Tufts University called for funds from a recent federal infrastructure bill to be diverted to dismantling “racist infrastructure” which is currently disproportionally impacting minority neighborhoods in the United States.”
