Following our previous look at an opening for a Preservation Architect at Architectural Preservation Studio, DPC, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Chairperson of Graduate Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design at The Pratt Institute School of Architecture.
The role, based in New York, calls for a “dynamic and visionary leader with outstanding communication, listening, and organizational skills who will build upon the strengths of the existing programs to serve as Chairperson for the Graduate Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design (GA/LA/UD) department.” The successful candidate will provide academic, curricular, and administrative leadership, as well as work with faculty to establish a vision for the department and each program. Among the required qualifications is a professional degree in architecture and at least five years of college-level teaching experience.
The open role at the Pratt Institute offers us the opportunity to look back at Archinect’s coverage of developments at the school across 2024. In September, students from the school were among the winners of the ‘Timber in the City 5: Urban Habitats’ competition which focused on creating healthy, sustainable, affordable urban environments. Also in September, we covered the school’s partnership with Creative AI Academy to advance corporate learning and training.
In May, Pratt School of Architecture Dean Quilian Riano authored a letter to faculty members outlining the need for over $70 million in maintenance and other upgrades to the 155-year-old Higgins Hall. Separately, Dean Riano was interviewed by Archinect in late 2023 as part of our ongoing Deans List series.
2024 also saw several female leaders from Pratt Institute contribute to the Archinect feature article Notes on Progress: Sixteen Women Discuss What It Means To Be Female in Architecture School. “I had a child in 2020 during the pandemic, essentially in the middle of my eight years of teaching,” Pratt Institute Visiting Assistant Professor Rychiee Espinosa said. “A colleague once asked me, does becoming a mother change how you teach? I didn't have a clear answer at the time, however, now experiencing life with a brand-new human being, I’ve come to observe how they learn to interact with the world and cultivate curiosity. Out of curiosity, novel ideas emerge and ignite joy — a quality we strive to foster in our students through making and exploration.”
Other developments from the school this year include the launch of a new Center for Climate Adaption aimed at researching resiliency solutions for island cities, and the launch of a new cluster hire initiative aimed at recruiting diverse faculty to each of the five degree-granting schools on its Brooklyn, New York campus.
Job Highlights is one of a number of ongoing weekly series showcasing the opportunities available on our industry-leading job board. Our Meet Your Next Employer series profiles and interviews interesting studios with open positions currently available on Archinect Jobs, while our weekly roundups curate job opportunities by location, career level, and job description.
