In the second to last installment of the Deans List in 2023, Paul Petrunia explores the vision of Quilian Riano, newly appointed at Pratt Institute's School of Architecture.
Orhan Ayyüce appreciates how "Quilian always preached and expanded on community impact on architecture. ‘His legacy’ from my point of view, would be a perpetual citizen architect for doing the talk and the walk for the greater good."
Plus, Niall Patrick Walsh spoke with Alisa Andrasek about "the relationship between computation, data, and architecture" et al.
Last year MVRDV completed the colorful (as in "eye-catching canary color finish") HAUS 1 office conversion in Berlin. Gary Garvin was definitely a fan "++++".
A team led by Shigeru Ban constructed Paper Log House a prototype for wildfire-ravaged Maui.
Kimberly Dowdell was inaugurated as the AIA's first Black woman president. reallynotmyname took the opportunity to gripe "There's lots of equity work to be done regarding AIA's staggering dues. Lots of people in my community are shut out of membership these days because they can't afford to pay the high dues. The membership in the local chapter these days is mainly large firm principals and the employees whose memberships they subsidize."
Donna Sink offered her congratulations to David Lake and Ted Flato, the founding partners of influential San Antonio, Texas-based Lake|Flato Architects, who were awarded the 2024 AIA Gold Medal by the American Institute of Architects. Their win was "Well-deserved".
Seth Branham Trotter was impressed by the "Nice brake edge and extruded mullion" on the SOM designed U.S. DOT Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The economic indicators didn’t look so hot at the end of 2023, with the Architecture Billings Index for both November and December remaining below 50. As Will Galloway summed up elsewhere "Economics are at the center of our profession, and of contemporary life in general, and trends like this are often the last thing we want to talk about."
reallynotmyname noted the passing of architect and Texan Eugene Aubry and pointed to an "Excellent tribute by Steven Fox". R.I.P.

Every year around Christmas archiwutm8’s "office gets into heated debates about how to draw something" and they weren't sure whether 2023 "debate will be about coffer beams or mullions."
Turns out they aren’t the only office that has this tradition, last year Jovan Millet’s argued over "representing and dimensioning window & door masonry openings". On the other hand Everyday Architect’s "been doing this all year long with a committee at my firm" and based on that experience EA believes "It's better IMHO to have it only once a year around Christmas. Dragging it out over the year means you get burned out and don't really put your whole heart and soul into arguing your stance as much."
Slev necro'd the 2022 Holiday Bonus thread, for 2023, particularly as they were disappointed with what they received. However, a number of folks indicated that what Slev received was in line with what they expect/typically get ie: "1.5-2.0%" of their salary and also that it really needs to be considered within the context of "total compensation". Plus it was noted "in my experience the most prominent firms give the worst bonuses (on top of typically lower base pay) unless you're a rainmaker for the firm."
Finally vitavandenbergh's thread asking for advice on the best way to fake concrete walls for a maquette, kicked off a complaint or two about "interior architecture" with natematt responding "Don’t be a dick. Interior architecture has been a typical degree title for at least 15 years…We get it, it’s interior design, everyone gets it. People don’t promote themselves as interior architects, it’s just the degree title. If you really care, take it up with the schools or the architecture boards."
More helpfully for the OP, Chad Miller recommended "using paint…neutral grey spray paint background with some contrasting color from the toothbrush should create that subtle color blend and texture you get with finished concrete…It's not a perfect process and will take some trial and error...It's a very cheap method that should only cost you around $20 for all the supplies."
