Following last week’s look at an opening for a Senior Project Manager at The Menil Collection, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opportunity on Archinect Jobs for the Director of the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University in St. Louis.
The role, based in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, calls for an individual who will “provide leadership to elevate pedagogy and research within the College and across the university, as well as recruit and retain exceptional faculty in their fields.” Candidates for the position will ideally hold a terminal degree in one of the disciplines taught within the school and “demonstrate a track record of research, creative practice, or significant equivalent professional activity appropriate for appointment as a full professor with tenure.”
Why the role interests us
The successful candidate for the position will replace Heather Woofter who, as we reported in June, was recently appointed dean of the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture. Back in 2017, Archinect spoke with Woofter during her time as director at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, in which she offered insights into the culture at Washington University in St. Louis.
“We look to our curriculum to create synergies with design and research-oriented curricula,” Woofter told us. “This effort acknowledges the need to advance our students’ intellectual curiosity, and provide scaffolding and opportunities for advanced study. Scholarly research creates new knowledge, provides a framework on which the school is founded, and directly impacts the work of designers by critically examining contemporary issues.”
This commitment to new knowledge and critically examining contemporary issues was on display earlier this year when the school held a mini-symposium exploring artificial intelligence and design creativity. The April symposium, which took place shortly before the launch of Archinect In-Depth: Artificial Intelligence, covered the future of AI-assisted design methods and tools, and dived into the “future of AI-assisted design and the implications for design practice and training, among other topics.”
Elsewhere, faculty and students from the Washington University in St. Louis recently joined a project to reconstruct an original Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome at the National Museum of American History while, in August, the school’s alumnus Cynthia Weese was awarded the 2023 AIA Chicago Lifetime Achievement Award.
