The fallout from David Adjaye’s sexual misconduct scandal is beginning to be felt by his firm, as now the New York Times and other national outlets are beginning to report on clients who have cut ties with the architect in light of this week’s allegations.
The city of Cleveland’s 35-acre waterfront development to which Adjaye Associates was attached in April of 2022 is the largest project to appear to be in jeopardy following the publication of the Financial Times' piece Saturday. Cleveland.com reported earlier today that Bedrock, the developer behind the plan, is now “evaluating” its “business association” with the firm going forward.
Adjaye’s design, which was finally unveiled in December, would radically alter the city’s once-faltering downtown area with 2,000 residential units, 850,000 square feet of office space, and a brand new Tower City Center anchoring its "central spine."
Added to this is the news that the firm’s Multnomah County Library project in Portland, Oregon has been called off according to OregonLive. The New York Times also reported late Thursday that the Studio Museum in Harlem project, which was expected to be opened in 2024, is also “parting ways” with the architect, who began the commission in 2015.
Lastly, in Chicago, Adjaye has similarly “stepped away” from a forthcoming housing project called Fern Hill that would affect the city’s Old Town neighborhood. The UK Holocaust Memorial also officially removed Adjaye from the project Thursday. And, finally, a planned exhibition of his monumental 2021 work “Asaase” at Massachusetts’ deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum has been called off by its Board of Trustees.
Adjaye, who has made comments in the past which were supportive of women in the industry, has denied the original report, stating “These allegations are untrue, distressing for me and my family and run counter to everything I stand for.”
Vermont’s Shelburne Museum and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, which have both recently announced planned expansions designed by the firm have yet to comment on the matter. Archinect will share more developments as they become available.
