The Architectural League of New York has named Jacob R. Moore as its next Executive Director, following a thorough national search. Moore succeeds Rosalie Genevro, who announced her decision to step down last year after leading the organization for nearly 40 years.
“Jacob brings tremendous passion and a deep knowledge of the most important forces and issues impacting the built environment today,” said Mario Gooden, President of The League’s board of directors. “His vision for the future of The League and his commitment to equity, spatial justice, and the environment make him the ideal person to shape our next chapter.”
Moore will assume the position after most recently serving as the Associate Director of the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University’s GSAPP. While at the Buell Center, he led the design, development, and execution of a range of public programs with a focus on the built environment, climate change, and social justice. Some of these initiatives include “The Green New Deal: A Public Assembly” and “Democracy in Retreat? Master Planning in a Warming World.” Moore also guided the curatorial teams for a number of exhibitions at the Buell Center, including Living in America: Frank Lloyd Wright, Harlem & Modern Housing and House Housing: An Untimely History of Architecture and Real Estate.
Moore also has extensive experience as a writer and editor. He is a founding editor of The Avery Review, an architectural journal at GSAPP. He also previously served as an Associate Editor at Princeton Architectural Press. Moore has co-edited and co-authored publications on topics related to sustainability and inequality within the built environment, among others. Moore has contributed to publications such as Artforum International, Future Anterior, and The League’s Urban Omnibus.
Moore received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Columbia College at Columbia University and a Master of Science in Critical, Curatorial, and Conceptual Practices in Architecture from GSAPP. His first official day as Executive Director will be September 5th.
“I’m humbled and honored to be asked to lead this storied, essential organization,” Moore commented on his appointment. “At a moment of flagging faith in design’s capacity — or even its willingness — to meaningfully address the intertwined demands for climate, social, and economic justice, the fields of the built environment require a strong cultural infrastructure committed to the support of important, difficult work. There is no better representation of this infrastructure than The Architectural League.”
