The D.I.R.T. founder and University of Virginia professor emerita profiles her career in landscape architecture beginning with her graduation from the Harvard GSD in 1987. From there, Bargmann went on to become a Fellow in Landscape Architecture at the American Academy in Rome before establishing the studio in Minnesota in 1992. Bargmann has since gone on to win the prestigious Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award and is elsewhere recognized as the "Queen of Slag" for her work outside of academia, which focuses heavily on post-industrial sites and the public realm.
Adriaan Geuze and Michael Van Valkenburgh are also featured guests in the 105-minute video episode. Recent projects are mentioned alongside the 2005 Vintondale Reclamation Park design and others shot on location in Philadelphia, Detroit, Dallas, and Charlottesville, respectively.
Besides PROJECTS, the episode is divided into two other parts (BIOGRAPHY and DESIGN) and touches on a variety of subjects, including her artistic influences, use of materials, and passion for the "planted form."
"Unearthing the raw ingredients of design from waste and wastelands defines my life’s work," Bargmann offers. "Both the pedagogy of my teaching and my methodology as a designer address the social and ecological imperatives to reclaim degraded land. Integrating regenerative technologies with design propositions and built landscapes embodies my contribution to the discipline of landscape architecture."
The TCLF shares their motivation for creating the series was to "make each practitioner’s story available to future generations of stewards, students, designers, researchers, and heritage travelers." This is the 18th installment of the series, which dates back to 2003. Charles A. Birnbaum is the executive producer. A link to all 25 of the episode's segments can be found here.
