Following last week’s look at an opening for a Senior Marketing and Proposal Coordinator at Olson Kundig Architects, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an AI-Related Architectural Intern at DVLPR.
The role, based in New York City, calls for an individual currently enrolled in a Doctoral, Master's, or Bachelor's degree program in architecture or a similar field, with experience integrating artificial intelligence into 3D form finding. Among the responsibilities of the role are developing data set strategies, creating physical models and drawings, and using artificial intelligence in 2D and 3D form finding.
Why the role interests us
The internship at DVLPR offers one example of how artificial intelligence, specifically machine-learning generative models, is beginning to be integrated into architectural workflows. In the case of 2D forms, AI can be used analytically to identify patterns in design proposals, or generatively to create or optimize spatial layouts. In 3D forms, meanwhile, architects are increasingly using AI generative tools as BIM plug-ins to develop 3D design concepts.
The role of such generative tools, and the machine learning models supporting them, was recently the subject of our feature article You, Me, and DALL-E: On the Relationship Between Architecture, Data, and Artificial Intelligence. In the article, architect and educator Dr. Matias del Campo expressed optimism that AI image generators such as Midjourney can “play the key role of augmenting the possibilities within our minds as humans,” and help architects “unlock things we cannot see.”
DVLPR’s focus on AI also comes as Archinect roles out our inaugural series of Archinect: In-Depth, which focuses specifically on artificial intelligence. As part of the series, we invite our community to enter our Generative Futures: An AI + Architecture Storytelling Challenge, a timely competition that encourages entrants to imagine the future of architecture and the built environment through the lens of artificial intelligence.
