Foster + Partners has announced its design of a master plan for a new seafront development in the Cypriot city of Larnaca.
Working for its client, the Petrolina Group, the firm will deliver “The Land of Tomorrow,” a multifaceted project that aims to double the available publicly-accessible space along the waterfront while enhancing the overall ecological value of the land located on the southern coast of the island.
Their press announcement promises a “low-rise, human-scale, and a natural extension of the urban grain” development that will aid the local community’s job prospects while supposedly celebrating the area’s heritage through a series of architectural gestures and the integration of historic artifacts emblematic of its industrial past.
Ben Scott, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners, said: “The master plan retains and enhances the city’s character while creating an exciting new vision for its future. Our approach has been developed in close consultation with the city authorities, building on the municipality’s key initiatives which promote sustainable and holistic urban growth.”
According to the design team, the intervention will help develop a “blue economy.” They say the plan will coincide with the parallel development of a regional plan made with local authorities, along with a mobility strategy that will aid transportation to the coastal city even further.
The scheme is being developed to pedestrianize the existing Larnaca-Dhekelia Road highway and “rewild” the canal network of the city. Additional public amenities, including hotels and apartment blocks, will be added as part of the project. Foster + Partners did not provide a construction timeline at press time.
