Following last week’s look at an opening for a Wayfinding Designer at Mijksenaar USA, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore the open role on Archinect Jobs for Dean of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union.

The successful candidate will become the school’s “academic and administrative leader” with responsibilities including curriculum development, supporting the school’s future disciplinary and interdisciplinary explorations, and the “cultivation of a supportive scholarly environment.”

Among the detailed qualifications required for the role are a professional degree in architecture, and “significant and recognized contributions to the culture of architecture.”

Why the role interests us

The Cooper Union originally launched its search for a new architecture school Dean in January, with application deadlines in February, following the resignation of Nader Tehrani from the position. Tehrani stepped down in the spring of 2022, leading to the appointment of Hayley Eber as Acting Dean for the 2022-2023 academic year at the end of August. The Cooper Union’s latest listing signals a renewed effort to install a new Dean, with applications now accepted until December 1st, 2022.

The job listing also offers an insight into future development plans at The Cooper Union; a school whose work frequently appears in our editorial. According to the listing, The Cooper Union sees itself as being at a “critical moment in its history,” with plans to restore full-tuition scholarships for all undergraduate students while “continuing to develop models of education that consider urgent ethical, cultural, and environmental issues.”
